JELD-WEN’s window safety week tips: Get fresh air without the risk

Breathe in the beauty of spring, while keeping your home and family protected.

Spring is the perfect time to open your windows and let the fresh air flow through your home. But open or unlocked windows can also create safety and security risks, especially for families with young children. Modern homes feature larger windows, brighter spaces, and improved airflow, making everyday awareness and proper window safety more important than ever.

That’s why National Window Safety Week, observed every April, serves as an important seasonal reminder. According to the National Safety Council, each year, more than 3,300 children in the U.S. are injured from window falls, highlighting the need for smarter safety solutions and everyday awareness.

Window opening control devices (WOCDs)

JELD-WEN windows can be ordered with optional window opening control devices, which limit window openings to less than four inches to help reduce the risk of accidental falls.

WOCDs also support emergency preparedness when properly installed:

  • Manual override allows for emergency escape and rescue
  • Automatically reset when the window is closed
  • Designed to support applicable egress

AL-Lock™: Automatic window security when properly installed

The JELD-WEN AL-Lock™ system is designed to add another layer of protection by automatically locking the window when it’s closed with no extra steps required.

Available on select single-hung and sliding vinyl windows, the AL-Lock™ is:

  • Made from 100% metal for durability
  • Designed for strength and long-term reliability
  • Tested to meet demanding security and forced-entry standards

“WOCDs and the JELD-WEN AL-Lock™ system turn simple design into added protection, helping to prevent accidents before they happen and keep people safe,” said Joe Miranda, director of product line management, “Built-in safety is the best kind.”

Simple tips to prevent window accidents

In addition to advanced window features, everyday practices matter. Consider these safety tips around your home:

  • Keep windows closed and locked near young children
  • Open windows that are out of children’s reach for ventilation
  • Keep furniture and beds away from windows
  • Remind children that window screens don’t prevent falls
  • Design play areas away from windows, balconies and patio doors

Safety that lasts

Window safety week may come once a year, but safer windows make a difference every day. Whether you’re upgrading your home or planning a future project, choosing well-designed safety and security features helps protect what matters most season after season.

Safety features are designed to help reduce risk when properly installed and used, but do not eliminate all risk. Always follow manufacturer instructions, applicable codes, and recommended safety practices.
